Private Day Tour from Munich

Eagle’s Nest

The Eagle’s Nest is what remains of a paradox pairing: Adolf Hitler chose as a retreat a place of surpassing beauty.

There are several reasons for doing the Eagle’s Nest private day tour. On one hand, it is fascinating for WW2 history buffs to see where Hitler spent about a third of his time in power and to explore what is left in the area. On the other hand, the ride up and the views from the top, with the Watzman in the background, are just breathtaking!

Ideas for our Eagle’s Nest private day tour from Munich

  • Already the drive there is beautiful and historically interesting. The A8 Autobahn has a reason for being so scenic!
  • This tour is highly dependent on the weather and can be easily turned around. One option is to try and get to the Obersalzberg as early as possible to avoid the crowds. Only special busses can climb the road to reach the Eagle’s Nest and they get busy. Once at the top we still have to walk through a tunnel and get into an elevator to actually reach the house.
  • The Eagle’s Nest is a restaurant nowadays. Possibly more interesting is walking outside, taking in the amazing views. An hour is spent easily, and more if you fancy getting something to eat or drink.

Options for the rest of the day

  • Once down again at the Obersalzberg, we would definitely explore that area, since that is where Hitler’s house, the Berghof, used to be (the Eagle’s Nest was merely a place for spending a few hours and impressing guests). If you are interested, we would recommend visiting the Dokumentation Obersalzberg, which offers access to part of the bunkers.
  • If Nazi past is not so much your thing, we would go down immediately after the Eagle’s Nest to Berchtesgaden. A pretty and typical alpine town, you’ll find more options for lunch there. And in the afternoon we would propose either a visit to the Salt Mine, which is possibly more interesting and fun than you think. Or taking a boat and crossing the Königsee Lake to the pilgrimage church of St. Bartholomew, marveling at the stunning landscape.

PRACTICALITIES

  • The buses going up to the Eagle’s Nest only operate between mid-May and mid-October, and even in the summer months they will stop going if the weather conditions are too bad.
  • If you are interested in nazi propaganda, see our private day tour to Nuremberg. The rise of the Third Reich happened in Munich. And one terrible consequence of all that was the former concentration camp of Dachau.
  • Salzburg is very close; if you want to visit it and do our Salzburg private tour, we would recommend spending the night in the area.
