Private Day Tour from Munich

Herrenchiemsee Palace

The least known palace of Ludwig II, Herrenchiemsee is a copy of Versailles surprisingly built on an island.

Can you imagine going to Versailles on a boat, with the Alps in the background? No other than King Ludwig II made this possible. Shortly after the war against France, the Bavarian king bought an island on the biggest lake in his territory, Lake Chiemsee, to build himself a copy of Versailles. The Herrenchiemsee Palace private day tour from Munich is about art, dreams and the will to preserve a beautiful place.

Ideas for our Herrenchiemsee Palace day tour from Munich

  • The drive out there, already beautiful, takes less than 1.5 hours. Boats leave regularly, and crossing over to Herreninsel takes around 15 minutes.
  • Once on the island, an easy and shady stroll will take us to the palace. The park in front of it offers plenty of photo opportunities. The visit of the inside takes 30 minutes: it is a copy of Versailles, but it never got finished—although the Hall of Mirrors manages to be a bit bigger than the French original.
  • For lunch we could stay on the island: the old monastery is today a restaurant. Or we could cross over to Fraueninsel, another smaller island known for the artist community living on it.
  • In the afternoon, and being so close to the Alps, we have the option of taking a funicular up a mountain to have a coffee enjoying the view over the lake we just crossed. Or if feeling active, we might fancy an easy 2 hours hiking tour. This is a day to enjoy being outside in beautiful surroundings, doing as many German families do in their holidays.
